The Love of Money

Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”Having money can be a useful and wonderful tool, not only for life, but for God’s Kingdom. However, we are clearly taught in Hebrews, to actually keep our lives from the “love of money”. It is the love money that is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10).We have to avoid valuing money or becoming controlled by it. It is always a challenge that money becomes to important to us or of actually thinking about what money can do for us.It is always been God’s plan to supply all of our needs and to take care of us financially, as Philippians 4:19 says, “my God shall supply all of my needs”, and then even more than that. God wants us to prosper. However, we need to keep our lives free from the importance of money or the importance of valuing it too much.It is always going to be a challenge, in our walk with the Lord to always reevaluate our lives. So often God will ask you to give a sizable amount of money, just to make sure that you are not attached to it. Especially when it costs you something. David said that he would not give to God, that which would cost him nothing. When you give to God, you have to feel it as a real sacrifice, that way you are crucifying each time any possibility of valuing money too much

What aspect of a Father’s character would require this of His children?Thank you very much.

Jesus said that if you are not faithful with ungodly mammon, how would you be faithful with spiritual riches (Luke 16:11)? Money is always in competition with God. Jesus said, “you cannot serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Money is the only thing that God compared to Himself. So, the rest of our lives, we are constantly tested to see if we are willing to surrender it, because it is the love of money, the scripture says, that causes evil (1 Timothy 6:10).Right from the very beginning with Abraham who is the Father of the Old Faith, and I know that you asked for the New Testament, but he is the Father of our Faith and is an example of everything in regards to faith. He had to sacrifice, or was required by God to give up the very thing that God had given him. The most precious thing in his life, he had to be willing to sacrifice it, to give it up. The rich young man, in Matthew 19, was willing to give up anything and everything to get eternal life, except surrender his money. Money can get a hold of a person’s heart. It is for our own benefit that we surrender and give up all that we have, all of our possessions, that we keep putting Him first. He told us that if we seek the Kingdom of God first then He will add all of these things to us.There are a multitude of scriptures that enhance all of these things that I am teaching you including the different epistles and letters of Paul and Peter. They all refer to these things of the world that hold us tight, especially money, which is definitely a controlling factor. Even David himself, in the Old Testament, the principal was that he would not give anything to God that did not cost him anything. There had to be a serious sacrifice involved. Giving what he had an abundance of wasn’t really giving. He had to give where he could feel that he had given. And so, God requires us, through obedience, to always be giving. It is not just for one Christian, it is for everybody, in every way.

Interesting thought here might be that we feel like we have given when we are sacrificial. The problem is that then becomes works focused. There are times when giveng a sacrificial (large) offering is God but equally giving only a smaller amount could be what God has asked in regard to teaching obedience not sacrifice. Giving $500 when God has said give $100 is disobedience. There are plenty of examples of obedince over sacrifice and even commands. However most people because of love of money or fear of lack (reallylack of trust in God) give far to little; a token to ease the conscience.
